Benefits of Biodiversity: Personal Connections to Nature

Many people and cultures view responsible stewardship of the land as a basic tenet of their religion or beliefs.  This is expressed in the Mohawk exhortation, "In our every deliberation, we should consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations."

Responsible stewardship suggests that there is a perceived value in nature beyond health, economics, or food.  There is, in addition, the spiritual or symbolic significance of humans' place in an intact natural community.  Moreover, biodiversity also has an intrinsic value beyond its tangible and intangible importance to humans, making it worth preserving for its own sake.
